Recently Pakistan Petroleum Limited has also made a gas discovery of 56 MMCFD in the area of Matiari in Sindh, which is a biggest discovery during past 10 years in the country.
The OGDCL is the largest exploration and production (E&P) company in Pakistan's oil and gas sector, which owns largest exploration acreage in Pakistan, covering 32 percent of the total acreage awarded. The company has largest portfolio of net hydrocarbon reserves in Pakistan with 61 percent of oil and 33 percent of gas reserves. The OGDCL contributes 30 percent of Pakistan's total natural gas production, and 46 percent of its oil production.
The company is active in a total 101 leases out of which in 69 blocks it is operator while on 32 blocks it is joint venture partner that are spread across the country. Average net crude oil production is 40,818 Barrels per Day (bpd), average net gas production is of 1.143 Billion Cubic feet per Day (BCFD), average net LPG production is 260 Metric Tons per Day (MTPD) and average net Sulphur production is 52 Metric Tons per Day (MTPD).
According to officials, the E&P companies during past three years have drilled a record 227 oil/gas wells and made 65 new discoveries. Under these steps, they said, around 560 MMCFD of additional gas and 27,000 bpd (barrels per day) of oil have been discovered but are not yet connected with the distribution network.
According to officials, at present 4.16 BCFD of gas was being distributed through the network of three gas distribution companies including Sui-Northern Gas Pipelines Limited (SNGPL) and Sui-Southern Gas Company Limited (SSGCL) and Mari Petroleum Company Limited (MPCL). The 4.16 BCFD of gas is not sufficient to meet the country's requirement as Pakistan's constrained gas demand stands at 6.3 BCFD, which means there is a gap of 2.2 BCFD. Hence, gas supply to many sectors in the country remain suspended in Punjab and in Sindh.
