Unidentified gunmen on Saturday shot dead a senior leader of Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam-Fazl (JUI-F), Dr Khalid Mehmood Soomro, police said. JUI-F Sindh chapter's secretary general Dr Soomro came under attack during Fajr prayers inside his religious school in Sukkur. "Gunmen broke into his house, located in the premises of his madressah, sprayed bullet on him and fled," police added. No group has, so far, claimed responsibility for the incident.

The police said they are ascertaining the motives behind the high profile murder. "Two guards were not present at the time of the attack. One guard was sleeping while the other was away from the crime scene as he was preparing for prayers," police added. Doctors said Dr Soomro received four bullets and succumbed to his injuries on way to a nearby hospital. He was in Sukkur to participate in a conference. Family sources said he was scheduled to attend a wedding ceremony of his son on Sunday. Supporters of JUI-F staged demonstrations in Sukkur and blocked the main highway. The JUI-F chief Maulana Fazlur Rehman demanded of the government to investigate the murder and arrest Dr Soomro's assassins.
