Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf-backed independent candidate Malik Aamir Dogar on Thursday won a by-election in NA-149 Multan by securing 58,142 votes. According to unofficial results, Aamir Dogar has won the by-poll with 58142 votes, whereas Makhdoom Javed Hashmi, who was supported by the ruling Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PMLN), stood second with 47,222 votes.

Hashmi admitted his defeat and congratulated Dogar for winning the by-election. Responding to initial results, Hashmi said the result trends were not in his favour. Talking to a private television channel, Hashmi said it was because of his efforts that people had appreciated the majesty of ballot, adding that he successfully drove his point or argument home that change could only come through ballot. "Even Tahirul Qadri and Imran Khan cannot change governments through politics of containers," he said. Hashmi said that his resignation was a result of a collective decision of lawmakers of his former party and he had to honour it.
