Like other parts of the world, International Workers Day also known as Labour Day is being observed on Thursday (today) with a resolve to continue struggle for ensuring all due rights and dignified status to working class. Various rallies, marches, processions, labour/worker unions' sessions and demonstrations will be held to mark this day.

Labour Day is celebrated every year in several countries including Pakistan on May 01, to pay tributes to the martyrs of Chicago, who laid their lives for the rights of labourers. Pakistan's first labour policy was devised in 1972, in which, May 01 was declared public holiday. This policy also formulated the creation of Social Security Network, Old Age Benefit Schemes and Workers Welfare Fund. However, workers are still deprived of their rights despite the fact that the country's constitution also contains various provisions and articles about labour rights.

The government, political parties, trade unions and professional groups will observe the day to pay homage to the workers who laid down their lives for labour rights in Chicago on May 01, 1886. All Pakistan Trade Unions Federation (APTUF) and Pakistan Workers Confederation (PWC) have planned a rally in Lahore, while rallies will also be held in other cities and towns in the Punjab. Workers will begin a procession in support of their demands from Bakhtiar Labour Hall.
