Former army chief Pervez Musharraf on Wednesday filed a contempt of court plea against Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif before a Special Court, saying the premier's statement in a sub-judice matter amounts to interference in the authority of the court.

Musharraf filed an application through his counsel during the hearing of a treason case against him and urged the Special Court to summon the Prime Minister for giving a press statement in the current matter which is sub-judice.

Appearing before a three-member bench of Justice Faisal Arab, the legal team comprising Dr Khalid Ranjha, Anwar Mansoor Khan, Shahabzada Ahmad Raza Kasuri, Raja Ibrahim Satti, Muhammad Ali Saif, Rana Ijaz Ahmad Khan, Chaudhry Faisal Hussain and Aftab Masood submitted a contempt application.

Citing the press statement of the Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif on Tuesday in which he said that apex court's judgement of July 31, 2009 was sufficient evidence against Musharraf for punishment in the current matter, the counsels for the former army chief termed it an outright interference in the authority of the court. The Supreme Court on July 31,2009 in Sindh High Court Bar Association case (PLD2009 SC 869) had declared November 3,2007 emergency and PCO imposition by Pervez Musharraf unconstitutional.

"The statement issued by the Prime Minister Mian Muhammad Nawaz Sharif amounts to interference in the authority of the Court, tends to prejudice the case of respondent/applicant and amounts to create obstruction in the proceedings before this hon'able court and further creates a scandalous perception that this court is not an independent court and it is subject to the directions/whims/suggestions of the Prime Minister who is appointing authority," Musharraf contended through his counsel. His counsel prayed the Special Court to summon Nawaz Sharif and deal with him in accordance with the law.
