The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) on Monday (today) will file a petition in the Supreme Court (SC) seeking the postponement of local bodies election. According to ECP, it is impossible to hold the polls under the prevailing circumstances. A high-level meeting of the ECP was held here on Sunday to review the current situation regarding LB polls.

The meeting was informed that the Punjab and Sindh governments were not ready to hold LB elections. There were many administrative problems in the two provinces, while the new local bodies act prepared by Punjab was flawed, further adding to the hurdles, it was told.

The Punjab government has removed the word 'non-party' based election from the act but has not specified 'party-based' local bodies' poll despite receiving clear order of the ECP.

The meeting also discussed the matter of printing of 400 to 500 million ballot papers. It was informed that the Printing Corporation of Pakistan had already excused to print the huge quantity of ballot papers at such a short notice.
