Pakistan's military will not let Taliban set conditions for peace talks as the government seeks dialogue to end the insurgency, the army chief said Monday. The statement from General Ashfaq Kayani came a day after two senior military officers were killed by a Taliban bomb in Pakhtunkhwa. Tehreek-i-Taliban Pakistan Sunday announced preconditions for any peace talks, saying troops must be withdrawn from the tribal areas and its prisoners released.

"It is understandable to give peace a chance through a political process but no one should have any misgivings that we would let terrorists coerce us into accepting their terms," Kayani said. Political parties last week gave their backing to Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif's calls to begin talks with the Taliban. But Kayani warned that militants "will not be allowed to take advantage of it (talks offer)". The army, he said, "has the ability and the will to take the fight to the terrorists".

Wasim Iqbal from Islamabad adds: Reacting strongly to the 'Shahadat' of three army personnel, including a Major-General, CoAS General Ashfaq Pervez Kayani vowed to spare no effort in bringing the perpetrators of these cowardly acts of terrorism to justice. "While it is understandable to give peace a chance through a political process, but no one should have any misgivings that we would let terrorists coerce us into accepting their terms. Army has the ability and the will to take the fight to the terrorists," General Kayani emphasised.

He also lauded the ultimate sacrifice of 'Shaheeds' and the injured of the four cowardly acts of terrorism which took place in Fata region, during the last two days. During the night of September 14-15, terrorists attacked a Khassadars' patrol party near Bannu. The attackers were repulsed by the patrol party. However, an encounter resulted in the shahadat of one and injuries to four Khassadars.

Later, in the early hours of September 15, two of the Army Posts located on Road Miranshah - Mir Ali were subjected to IED attacks by terrorists. The posts along this road are meant to keep the traffic un-interrupted and secure. One soldier of Army and one of FC KP laid their lives for the motherland whereas two soldiers sustained injuries in these attacks.

The most heinous act of terrorism took place at 1230 hours on September 15 near village Gatkotal, Upper Dir. This too was an IED attack on the vehicle of Major-General Sana Ullah Khan, General Officer Commanding 17 Division, presently operating in Swat. The General Officer along with Lieutenant-Colonel Tauseef Ahmad and Sepoy Irfan Sattar embraced Shahadat in this attack. Major General Sana Ullah was visiting his troops deployed on the Pak-Afghan Border. He stayed with troops that night at a 10,000 feet high border post in Bin Shahi Sector. His vehicle was targeted during move back. Acknowledging the Major General Sana Ullah Khan's ultimate sacrifice for the motherland, the CoAS said, "We all salute his bravery." He also pledged to stand with the families of martyrs and the injured.
