The sources said, last year the government had extended Rs 469 billion power subsidy to consumers and tariff for domestic consumers will be increased in October or December as no final decision has yet been taken so far. The sources said, federal government is expected to generate Rs 325-350 billion from massive tariff increase on commercial, industrial, agriculture and domestic consumers across the board during the current fiscal year.
A senior official of Ministry of Water and Power told this scribe that the amount of subsidy for the current financial year has been estimated at Rs 500 billion plus which will be reduced to Rs 150-175 billion, thereby implying that the inter-circular debt will not be allowed to resurface.
The official said the amount of subsidy for consumers who use up to 200 units a month constitutes 64 percent of domestic consumers and would be about Rs 150 billion per annum. Subsidy is also extended to different categories of consumers, ie, from Rs one billion to Rs 1.5 billion, with a grand total of Rs 5-10 billion, because tariff is being raised to the level of Minimum Determined Tariff (MDT).
