  • Comments Off on PSM, EPZ: Cheema removed from both positions
Federal Government has removed Chairman Export Processing Zone (EPZ) and Interim Chief Executive Officer (CEO), Pakistan Steel Mills Saadat S Cheema without citing any reasons. However, insiders claimed that his close relations with Choudhry Pervaiz Elahi, former Deputy Prime Minister and Punjab Chief Minister could be the grounds behind his removal.

On July 19, 2013, Cheema was given the interim charge of CEO PSM after Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif accepted the resignation of Major General Muhammad Javed (retired). According to sources, the charge of CEO is now being given to Wasif Mehmood who is senior most officer in the PSM.

He has already served at this position. The notification of Saadat Cheema had been considered illegal and in violation of Memorandum of Article of the Association vide clause 87, 88 and 89. When contacted, Saadat Cheema, confirmed that his services as Chairman EPZ and interim CEO PSM had been terminated. He, however, was unhappy the way the government ousted him from both positions without giving any reason.

"I have been told that my contract has been cancelled but I have not received a notification so far," said Cheema, who is in Islamabad. In reply to a question on the possible reasons behind his removal, he said that "apparently they (rulers) do not like my face." Asked if his close contacts with Choudhry Pervez Elahi might have been a key factor for his removal from both positions, he said he was loyal to the Chaudharys and that he would even "sacrifice" ten similar positions for them. He maintained that he did a lot of work in a short span of time for PSM.

"Today I had announced PSM would give salary to 10,000 workers prior to Eid," he added. According to the procedure, the Prime Minister approves the removal of top position holder of company or department and then the administrative Ministry notifies it formally. The sources said, Cheema also worked hard to get another bailout package of Rs 17 billion for PSM from the federal government.
