British Prime Minister David Cameron on Sunday promised to increase the quantum of bilateral trade to £3 billion by 2015 and vowed to stand together with Pakistan in the war against terror to help chalk out a peace deal in Afghanistan.

"United Kingdom will continue to play its leading role in the international community to support Pakistan to enhance its economic growth. The UK will fully support Pakistan to get GSP-Plus status‚which will help to give new boost of its trade with the European Union. My country wants to expand trade and commercial relations with Pakistan through increasing bilateral relations," Cameron said at a joint press conference with Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif here.

Cameron is the first Western leader to visit Pakistan after general election in May.

Cameron said that leaders of business communities of the two countries had discussed ways to promote bilateral trade and investment. Both sides also agreed to encourage strong participation for investment in the energy sector, he said. There were enormous investment opportunities for Pakistani investors in Britain, he said.

He said that the two countries agreed to continue their regular dialogue on economic reform under the framework of the Enhanced Strategic Dialogue (ESD). Under the framework of the ESD, the two governments would continue their regular dialogue on economic reform, he said.

In a joint statement, the two Prime Ministers also agreed to find new ways to make the close and co-operative friendship beneficial for the people of the two countries. They expressed the resolve to intensify co-operation "as equals towards greater progress and prosperity".

Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif promised his government's full support for creating the right environment to attract further investment in the country. He focused on trade, pledging a new target of increasing bilateral trade to £3 billion by 2015, up from their previous commitment of £2.5 billion.

He informed the British Prime Minister about his ambitious plans to enhance growth‚ create jobs and reduce poverty to create a brighter future for the people of Pakistan.

The Prime Minister reiterated his commitment to increase the enrolment of children in schools and quality of education in Pakistan‚ and welcomed a continuing‚ strong partnership with the UK to transform education in Pakistan.

Prime Minister Cameron announced that the British Council would be opening a library in Lahore and a cultural space in Karachi.

Prime Minister Cameron welcomed empowerment for the poorest through Pakistan's increased funding for the income support programme and recommitted the ongoing UK assistance for the programme.

On the subject terrorism, Cameron said: "We will stand together and conduct this fight against extremism and terrorism. I profoundly believe that a stable, prosperous, peaceful and democratic Afghanistan is in Pakistan's interest, just as a stable, prosperous, peaceful and democratic Pakistan is in Afghanistan 's interest."

Responding to Cameron's appeal, Sharif said: "I have assured Prime Minister Cameron of our firm resolve to promote the shared objective of a peaceful and stable Afghanistan, to which the three million Afghan refugees currently living in Pakistan can return with honour and dignity."

Prime Minister Cameron paid tribute to the people of Pakistan for rendering sacrifices in the fight against terrorism. He said that Britain would work in partnership with Pakistan providing expertise in support of Pakistan's developing strategy on counter terrorism. He said that the UK would provide more equipment to tackle the scourge of improvised explosive devices. It will also support Pakistan in improving the security of its infrastructure‚ including safeguarding sporting events, he said.

Prime Minister Muhammad Nawaz Sharif also apprised Prime Minister Cameron about the ongoing Pakistan-India Peace process. They underscored the importance of peace, stability and security in Afghanistan and reaffirmed their support for an Afghan-led and Afghan-owned reconciliation process. In the coming months, the Adviser to the Prime Minister on National Security and Foreign Affairs Sartaj Aziz and Secretary of State William Hague will discuss specific measures through the ESD which underscores the unbreakable partnership between Pakistan and the UK. There will be regular dialogue between Ministers, including the UK Secretary for International Development Justine Greening on UK development co-operation, and Home Secretary Theresa May who will intensify mutually beneficial co-operation. Prime Minister Muhammad Nawaz Sharif accepted an invitation to visit the UK.
