National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) on Wednesday confirmed that 35 people were killed and about 150 inured as a result of the earthquake that hit Mashkhail (Balochistan) the other day. According to NDMA's initial assessment of damages, most of the destruction occurred in District Washuk, Tehsil Mashkhail, where 35 deaths were reported while 150 inured besides 700 houses were damaged.

Some buildings in Panjgur were partially damaged, but no loss of life was reported. However details from far flung areas are still being ascertained. The NDMA spokesperson said that the authority was in constant touch with Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) and the Army including Southern Command in Quetta. Soon after the earthquake, 160 persons of FC along with a doctor and some paramedics were immediately sent to the area to provide support to civil administration. Additional troops of FC also reached the area along with essential relief assistance including 800kg Atta, 200kg Ghee, 400kg Daal, 400kg Rice, 100 blankets and 60 cartons of milk packs.

The spokesperson further said that so far 105 injured persons had been treated and 15 critically injured, who were flown by helicopters during the night to Sheikh Hospital Dalbandin, had now reached Combined Military Hospital Quetta by helicopter for better treatment.

Two helicopters carrying 5 tons of medicines, dry rations and tents were flown during the night to Mashkhail. These helicopters were also carrying 7 doctors (5 army doctors, 2 civil doctors) and 24 paramedical staff. Two helicopters carrying 32 tents, 20 blankets and 34 food packets along with media team flew for Mashkhail but could not land due to sand storm and instead landed at Dalbandin. A fifth helicopter sortie carrying 70 tents flew from Quetta and has reached Dalbandin.

PDMA Balochistan has despatched 20 trucks carrying 110 food packets, 350 tents, 100 bags of Daal (50kg each), 100 water coolers, 100 lamps, 100 bags of sugar, 10 bags of tea (50kg each). In addition, PDMA is utilising the services of army helicopters for transportation of assistance. So far 60 tents, 50 blankets and 500 food packets have been despatched through helicopter along with medicines and medical staff.
