In a directive, the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) on Monday said that dual nationals are not eligible to hold any post in any political party under existing rules and regulations. During the meeting, the commission said under the Political Order 2002 no individual having dual nationality is eligible to hold post in any political party. The office bearers of any political party have to follow the same rules which apply for parliamentarians in general.

The Commission issued these directives while hearing a petition filed against the agreement signed between the government and Leader of Pakistan Awami Tahreek. In his petition, Engineer Jalil Malik argued that a dual national could not hold any post in a political party under the existing rules hence there was no legal bearing of the agreement.

The ECP dismissed the petition on grounds that Dr Tahirul Qadri did not hold any position within Pakistan Awami Tehreek (PAT). Meanwhile, the ECP dismissed a petition pertaining to the ineligibility of Sardar Yar Muhammad Rind and called for a review meeting on fake degrees issue today (Tuesday).
