The attack on Malala Yousufzai and her friends is not just a crime against an individual, but a crime against humanity and an attack on "our core moral and social values", Prime Minister Raja Pervez Ashraf said on Friday. He was speaking with media persons after visiting Malala at the Armed Forces Institute of Cardiology (AFIC).

He said that extremists had attacked Malala because they were scared of the power of her vision. He said that according to Malala's doctors, the next 36 hours were critical. The Prime Minister was accompanied by President of PML-Q Chaudhry Shujaat Hussain, Farooq Sattar of Muttahida Quami Movement (MQM) Haji Adeel of Awami National Party (ANP), Commerce Minister Makhdoom Amin Fahim and Information Minister Qamar Zaman Kaira.

The Prime Minister said that the nation was united in condemning this act and the poisoned mindset that sought to destroy the soul of Pakistani nation. He said: "She (Malala) had a simple message 'The right for girls to be educated'...Malala is a true Pakistani and she is Pakistan's real face. We will not allow anyone to tarnish Pakistan's image," he said, adding that Malala had created a movement across Pakistan. Raja Pervez Ashraf said that Pakistani girls wanted to follow Malala's footsteps.

"We pledge that Pakistan's enemies will never be allowed to succeed. We pledge that we will uproot...extremism and militancy. We pledge that we will not surrender the soul of the (Pakistani) nation. Every Pakistani is praying for the complete recovery of Malala," the Prime Minister said. He maintained that Malala was being treated by best professionals.
