The Met Office on Wednesday said a monsoon weather system is expected to move towards Pakistan in the next 48 hours and warned that widespread rain may cause flash floods in urban and other vulnerable areas. In its fresh weather advisory, the Met Office said that the weather system was currently over Madhya Pradesh (India) and adjoining areas and was likely to trigger rains from Thursday to Saturday.

"This well marked low is likely to move north-west ward in the next 48 hours (towards Pakistan). Under the influence of this weather system, strong monsoon currents would start to penetrate Pakistan from Thursday, giving widespread monsoon rains with scattered heavy downpours in the country from Thursday to Saturday. Heavy downpours during this period are likely to generate urban and flash floods in vulnerable areas," the advisory said.

However, meteorologists ruled out the probability of riverine floods, particularly in eastern rivers of the country. The Met Office urged authorities concerned to remain alert during the current week. In Sindh, it forecast widespread rains/thundershowers with isolated heavy rain falls during the same period.

Scattered rain/thundershowers with isolated heavy falls are expected in Islamabad and Punjab on Thursday. It said widespread rain/thundershowers with scattered heavy falls, at times very heavy, are likely to hit Islamabad and Punjab on Friday and Saturday. Heavy rains, the Met Office warned, were likely to trigger flash floods in Dera Ghazi Khan division and adjoining areas during this period, the Met office warned.

In Khyber-Pakhunkhwa, weather experts said, scattered rains/thundershowers with isolated heavy falls might occur on Thursday. It added widespread rain/thundershowers, with scattered heavy falls, are predicted on Friday and Saturday in the province. It said heavy rains are expected to trigger flash floods in lower parts of the province including Dera Ismail Khan, Bannu and Kohat divisions from Thursday to Saturday.

The Met Office suggested scattered rain/thundershowers with isolated heavy falls in eastern parts of Balochistan during the same period. It said heavy rains are likely to generate flash floods in north-eastern parts of the province, including Zhob, Sibbi and Nasirabad divisions. In Azad Kashmir, it said, widespread rain/thundershowers with isolated heavy falls were forecast from Thursday to Saturday. In Gilgit-Baltistan, it said, scattered rain was expected from Thursday to Saturday.
