A powerful roadside bomb on Wednesday evening hit the contract bus of Pakistan Space & Upper Atmosphere Research Commission (Suparco) at Moach Goth killing one person and wounding 27 other.

According to SP Qamar Zaman, the incident took place at Moach Goth in the limits of Saeedabad police station where an improvised device planted in a bicycle that was parked near Moach Goth Mor at Hub river road went off when a contract bus of SUPARCO (JB-1319) reached the spot. He said that a passer-by namely Ansar lost his life while 27 others sustained injuries in a blast.

Moreover, SP Qamar Zaman said that some 17 persons got minor injuries and were discharged after medical treatment while the rest of the injured persons including Haroon, 45, son of Khasta Khan, Syed Ali, 35, son of Khasta Khan, Waseem, 22, son of Salim Shah, Salim Shah, 45, son of Nany, Parveez, 25, son of Hayat, Pir Muhammad, 55, Faisal, 40, son of Salim, Wahid, 20, son of Iqbal, Ghafoor Karim, 50, and Saqib got serious injuries and were admitted to Civil Hospital Karachi (CHK) for treatment.

Following the said incident, the law enforcers, investigators, rescuers of different organisations and experts of Bomb Disposal Squad (BDS) rushed to the spot and engaged in rescue work. They collected bomb samples to ascertain the modus operandi and nature of the blast.

Officials of BDS said the bomb was locally made as a box, which carried 2 to 3kgs of high explosive material, was installed on a bicycle and the culprits detonated it with a remote device.

They said the culprits did not use nuts and bolts in this blast and added that none of victims received burn injures but sustained sharp cuts on their bodies as the windowpanes of the bus shattered after the blast.

SHO Saeedabad Chaudry Irshad said the bomb exploded at around 4:15pm when a contract bus of SUPARCO, which was on the way to drop SUPARCO employees, reached Hub river road. They said that two of the injured persons were the residents of Baldia Town while rest of the others were living in Malir area. He said that it is premature to say anything about the blast as nobody has so far claimed the responsibility of the blast.
