Prime Minister Syed Yousuf Raza Gilani on Friday said several attempts to dislodge the government were foiled in last four years, but some elements are trying to avoid the upcoming Senate elections. Talking to media on the conclusion of the two-day international conference on Competition Enforcement Challenges and Consumer Welfare in Developing Countries, organised by the Competition Commission of Pakistan.

Gilani said that some elements were running away from the upcoming Senate elections scheduled in March 2012. The conspiracies had been hatched against the government during the last four years, but it was strength of the parliamentary democracy that even a single attempt did not bear fruit. He categorically stated the democratic government could not be destabilised by hatching conspiracies, as political and democratic system was achieved after great sacrifices.

During the last four years no force could harm the government that shows the strength of the democratic system. He said the nation, civil society and media were supporting democracy to prevail in the country. It is the success of the present democratic system which has sustained for the last four years despite the conspiracies being hatched against it, he added.

He said all the institutions and the nation is in favour of democracy, adding that the opposition is employing different tactics to avoid the Senate elections, however they will not succeed in their attempts. The parliamentary system in the country was strong enough which is proved by the fact that historically governments had fallen after only one conspiracy.

Responding to a query, he ruled out any possibility of destabilising the present system despite threats. It was the testimony of a strong democratic system that the government was in place despite several undemocratic attempts against it. The democratic system was the result of numerous sacrifices by great leaders including Benazir Bhutto and Zulfikar Ali Bhutto. To another question, he said those who called the Parliament a rubber stamp, should understand that gone are the days when the democracy could have been derailed.
