Prime Minister Syed Yousuf Raza Gilani has said that Pakistan is a strong country and would protect its national interest at any cost. Addressing a press conference here at State Guest House on Sunday, he expressed the hope that peace in Karachi would be restored through the firm steps presently the government was taking.

Regarding national interests, he said that the government was attaching great importance to the national interests and would protect it at any cost. He said that Pakistan wanted to have friendly relations with US on the basis of mutual respect and mutual interests without compromising each other's national interests. He said they had explained to the US government that if they were answerable to Congress, then Government of Pakistan was equally answerable and accountable to Pakistani parliament.

To a query, he said the country had played important role in fight against terrorism and no one should raise fingers over it. He said due to its strategic position Pakistan had to assume the role of a frontline state in the fight against terrorism. He said Pakistan's intelligence agencies and CIA were working in close liaison with each other, adding that both the agencies had launched joint actions against high-level targets in the past.

The prime minister while castigating the cross-border attack in Chitral said the country's foreign office had lodged protest over it. He said some elements were not wanting friendly relations between Pakistan and Afghanistan and were creating disturbances. He hoped that relations between the neighbouring countries would strengthen in near future.

Gilani said that due to successful operations of law enforcement agencies in Federally Administered Tribal Area (FATA), Swat and Malakand, the terrorists had dispersed, who had now turned to soft targets like girls' schools, shopping malls, and public places in order to cause collateral damages to life and property.

The prime minister said that Karachi situation was also a reaction to the killing of Osama Bin Laden in Abbottabad operation.

To a question he said that the possibility of foreign hands' involvement in Balochistan and Karachi unrest could not be ruled out. Regarding calling out Army in Karachi, he said police and Rangers were controlling the situation in the metropolitan. He further said that armed forces did not want to get involved in this scenario. He said military action was not a permanent solution to the problematic issue.

He urged international community to support the country in its efforts against terrorism. The prime minister stated that poverty, inflation, dearness, unemployment and illiteracy were the root causes of terrorism, pointing that development was the answer to the problem.

Regarding the issue of southern Punjab province he said it was the desire and wish of the people of the area, saying that any decision in this regard would be taken after the report of PPP's committee.

About the abduction of Shahbaz Taseer Gilani said that PPP was concerned about the incident. He added that the PPP had sacrificed a lot for democracy and rule of law in the country.
