At least 27 security personnel were martyred and up to 45 militants were killed during two-day bloody skirmishes at Barool village of Nusrat Dara area near Pak-Afghan border in Upper Dir district, police said on Thursday. The skirmishes started when about 300 armed militants, who crossed from across western border, besieged Shalo Thall check-post jointly manned by Dir Levy and Police on Wednesday and started indiscriminate firing on Pakistani law enforcement agencies.

The police and Dir Levy promptly responded to the brazen attack, erupting deadly clashes, which continued with intermittent intervals on Thursday also. Till filing this report, 27 security personnel had embraced Shahdat while up to 45 militants were also reportedly killed.

The dead security personnel identified including police constables Lal Zada, Sabz Ali, Said Nawab, Shah Zollah, Shujjat Rehmatullah, ex servicemen Inspector Juma Khan, Sub Inspector Zahir, Havaldar Shakirulah Khan, Abdullah, Wazir Muhammad, special force employees Shamsu Rehman, Imran Ehsan, levy men Sajjad, Jehanzab, Bacha Rawan, Muhammad Raza. The security forces backed by gunship helicopters also pounded suspected positions of militants in bid to quell the Taliban offensive. The administration has imposed curfew in the troubled area and no one was allowed to enter in the restive area. The police said militants had destroyed two schools and several houses with rocket and gunfire attacks while a police vehicle was also damaged, killing driver Rehmatullah Khan.
