Another round of speculations came to an end on Tuesday when President Asif Ali Zardari issued a notification appointing a PPP stalwart and former Attorney General Sardar Latif Khan Khosa as Governor of Punjab. As Governor of Punjab, Sardar Latif Khosa would replace the outspoken governor Salmaan Taseer, who was gunned down by his own bodyguard last week in the Capital.

"On the advice of the Prime Minister, President Asif Ali Zardari has appointed Sardar Latif Khosa as Governor Punjab. The President signed the summary of Khosa's appointment Tuesday night," said a statement issued by Farhatullah Babar, spokesman to the President.

The President has taken the decision after spending a hectic week in consultation with senior party leaders while he was in Karachi to win back its ally, the MQM. Though there were media reports suggesting Prime Minster Yousuf Raza Gilani's disapproval over the appointment, analysts are of the opinion that the appointment is a step towards pacifying escalating tension with PML-N in the province.

The PML-N had given a 10-point agenda to the government if it wanted to be a coalition partner in the Punjab. Sardar Latif Khan Khosa had been a member of the upper house of the parliament. Afterwards, when appointed as Attorney General for Pakistan, Khosa was removed from the office on corruption charges. He has also served as Advisor to the Prime Minster as well.
