The parliamentary committee on judges' appointments unanimously elected Senator Nayyar Hussain Bukhari as its chairman, and confirmed Justice Ejaz Chaudhary as Chief Justice of Lahore High Court, the nominee of the Judicial Commission of Pakistan. Secretary, Parliamentary Committee, Muhammad Amin, informed the media that the members unanimously elected Nayyar as chairman of the committee.

He said that as per the 18th Amendment, the committee has approved and ratified Justice Ejaz Chaudhary as Chief Justice of Lahore High Court, as proposed by the Judicial Commission of Pakistan. He added that the recommendation for this nomination would be forwarded immediately to the Prime Minister. Justice Ejaz is the senior most Judge in the Lahore High Court after the incumbent Chief Justice Khwaja Sharif.

About rules of procedure for the committee, the Secretary said that the quorum to constitute a sitting of the committee would be five members. He added that the committee would not confirm a nomination if three-fourths majority (six members) of its total membership reject the nomination within fourteen days. He said that Nayyer is permanent chairman of the committee. However, if the composition of the House (National Assembly or Senate) changes, then a new chairman may be elected.

Sources in the committee told Business Recorder that PML-Q leader Shujaat's suggestion to rotate the appointment of the chairman of the committee was rejected. Senator Sabir Ali Baloch told media that PPP members offered chairmanship to Shujaat, Ishaq Dar and Mehtab Ahmed Khan but they sought to be excused. Subsequently, the members unanimously proposed the name of Nayyer Hussain Bukhari to head the committee.

The committee comprises of eight members--four belonging to the ruling party, and the rest four to the opposition. Bukhari is a member of Pakistan People's Party and also leader of the House in the Senate. All the members, Senators Shujaat, Dar, and Nayyer, and Sabir Baloch, and MNAs Mehtab Khan, Ghous Bux Mahar, Aftab Shahban Mirani and Asma Arbab Alamgir attended the meeting.
