On the call of trade associations, business and commercial activities in the city remained suspended. Industrial production also came to a halt due to absence of public transport. All the educational institutions also remained closed. Petrol pumps and CNG stations in the city also stayed shut. People remained indoors despite the fact that MQM had not given any call for strike.
Dr Farooq Sattar, Deputy Convenor, MQM Co-ordination Committee and Federal Minister for Oversees Pakistanis and members MQM Co-ordination Committee Raza Haroon and Wasey Jalil accompanied the family of the deceased from London. Rehman Malik, Federal Interior Minister, Dr Ishrat-ul-Ibad Khan, Governor Sindh, Babar Ghauri, Mustafa Kamal and Nasreen Jalil received the dead body at the airport.
Rehman Malik met with the family of the deceased and offered condolences over the demise of Dr Imran Farooq. The funeral prayers, led by prominent religious scholar Maulana Asad Thanvi, were attended by a large number of party workers and sympathisers. A large number of politicians and people from all walks of life also attended the funeral prayers.
Pir Mazhar-ul-Haq, Senior Minister for Education, Rashid Rabbani, Advisor to Chief Minister Sindh, Waqar Mehdi, Special Assistant to Chief Minister Sindh and Najmi Alam, President, PPP Sindh also attended the funeral prayers. Later, Dr Imran Farooq was laid to rest at Shuhada Graveyard, Yaseenabad.
