Prime Minister Syed Yousuf Raza Gilani on Saturday directed the Sindh government to form a high-level judicial commission to investigate the murder of MQM MPA Raza Haider and all other people killed in recent wave of targeted killings in Karachi. The Prime Minister said all the coalition partners have agreed to a code of conduct to maintain peace in the city.

Speaking at a press conference at Sindh Chief Minister House here, the Prime Minster said he held a meeting with the senior leadership of coalition partners including PPP, MQM and ANP and all of them have resolved that peace must be maintained in the larger interest of the country particularly Karachi.

Interior Minister Rehman Malik, Sindh Governor Dr Ishratul Ibad Khan, Chief Minister Syed Qasim Ali Shah, Home Minister Zulfiqar Mirza, Raza Haroon of MQM, Afrasiab Khattak of ANP and Rashid Rabbani of PPP were also present on this occasion. According to the code on conduct signed by Rashid Rabbani, Raza Haroon, Afrasiab Khattak and Federal Interior Minister Rehman Malik, it has been resolved that extra care is to be observed to make political environment conducive.

They also resolved that they will assist the law enforcement forces in taking strict action against drug mafia, land mafia and target killers. They also resolved to form co-ordination committees comprising MQM, ANP and PPP and other stakeholders to promote peace and harmony in their respective areas. They resolved to identify Taliban/terrorists/members of banned organisations and those involved in targeted killings and have taken refuge in Sindh in general and Karachi in particular. They resolved to assist the authorities in taking action against Taliban/terrorists/members of the banned organisations.

They resolved that the government will compensate the families of victims. The Prime Minister expressed concern over the targeted killings in the city, however, he ruled out possibility to call the Army to maintain law and order situation in Karachi.

He said all the coalition partners are politically matured parties and able to resolve all issues for themselves. There would be no need to call Pak Army in the city, he added. "Initially we wanted to stop targeted killings and decided to bring all the stakeholders together at one place to create a peaceful environment," he said, adding that after this exercise, the core issues would be discussed and the government will try to resolve them in consultation with all coalition partners. He said that short term, medium term and long term strategies would be adopted to resolve all the issues.

Gilani made it clear that the government will take action against all culprits without discrimination. He said the government will not allow displaying weapons in the city. He said Karachi is the commercial hub of the country and its stability is vital for the economic and political stability of the country.
