All Pakistan Textile Mills Association (Aptma) on Sunday announced to call off the two-day strike in a week after holding a meeting with Prime Minister Syed Yousuf Raza Gilani. Talking to media, APTMA Chairman Ejaz Gohar announced to end the strike and said the government should work for resolving all the problems being faced by the textile industry as soon as possible.

During the meeting, Prime Minister Syed Yousuf Raza Gilani said that the government is committed to provide every possible facility to the textile industry, which was considered the backbone of the country's economy.

Talking to the Aptma delegation, he said every sector of the textile industry would be heard without any discrimination for solving their problems. The Prime Minister has decided that all the stakeholders of the textile industry would soon be invited to Islamabad for a detailed discussion with the members of the Cabinet committee on textile including the State Minister for Economic Affairs, Hina Rabbani Khar, Defence Minister and former minister for trade Chaudhry Ahmad Mukhtar and Advisor to Prime Minister on Finance. He assured the delegation that all issues regarding the textile industry would be resolved after consulting the stakeholders.

Earlier, Aptma chairman apprised the Prime Minister of the problems of the textile industry and said 15 percent regulatory duty imposed by the government on the export of cotton yarn had a negative impact on the industry.

He said that the APTMA was never in favour of strikes but it had to go on strike due to unavoidable circumstances. The delegation consisted of Aptma representatives from all parts of the country.
