Promising young Brazilian Tiago Fernandes got the perfect birthday present Saturday by beating Australian Sean Berman to win the Australian Open boys' singles title. Fernandes, who was 17 on Friday, outgunned his opponent 7-5, 6-3 for his first major title.

"It was an unbelievable week, all the players played really good but this week I could play better. I just want enjoy this moment," said the 14th seed. Asked what were his plans for the season, he replied: "I'm going to try to mix the junior tournaments with some professional tournaments." Former French Open champion Gustavo Kuerten ranks as Brazil's best-ever player.
