Chances of smooth sailing of the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) government are yet 50-50 and much more is dependent on the settlement of some important issues during the month of February. The most influential circles of the PPP strongly believe that the government may face a turmoil-like situation, if the upcoming important developments turn opposite to it.

The sources said future of some of the sensitive and key positions in the country is likely to be determined in the month of February and any confusion on this front may lead to a topsy-turvy situation for the government. Furthermore, the apex court verdict on the National Reconciliation Ordinance (NRO) is also a grave source of concern for the PPP government.

They said the PPP leadership was minutely watching the developments on these important fronts before taking a clear-cut position. It may be noted that the Federal government is cutting a sorry figure on rising pressure from the opposition parties on reopening of the corruption cases against the President Zardari, after the NRO verdict. Prime Minister Yusuf Raza Gilani has advocated strongly for the President Zardari in the Parliament, inviting the opponents to approach the Supreme Court on the interpretation of the Article 248 of the Constitution.

The PPP sources have feared deteriorating relations even with the coalition partner like Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM), in case the pressure on the government notches up further. Not only this, they also hinted at the severity of relations with Pakistan Muslim League Nawaz (PML-N), simply to ease out the NRO pressure on the PPP leadership.

When asked about the possible outcome of the prevailing situation, the PPP sources said it is a war of nerves and only a steel-nerved person would get through the present pressure tactics from across the board. However, they added, the future of the PPP in the government depends upon the settling down of dust on many important issues, in the month of February.
