A serious law and order situation was witnessed on Friday when hundreds of Bengalis pressed on their long-standing demand of recognising them as true Pakistani national and issue them with the Computerised National Identity Cards (CNICs).

According to details, a large number of Bengalis under the aegis of Muslim League Sher-e-Bengal Group tried to block the Korangi road in the afternoon in a protest against the remarks of Minister of Interior Rehman Malik. At the same time, heavy contingent of police reached on the spot and started baton charge in order to disperse them, while few activists were also arrested by the Defence Police.

After the incident, the whole crowd surrounded the Defence police station and got released their four colleagues. Later, the protesters held a big demonstration outside Karachi Press Club against the attitude of the government. The speakers criticised the remarks of Rehman Malik saying that minister's statement had insulted honest, patriotic Bengalis.

The attitude of the federal as well as provincial government particularly the National Aliens Registration Authority (Nara) had remained very unresponsive towards the Bengali community and were deprived of the basic right of citizenship, they alleged. They demanded of the government to recognise them as true nationals of the country and issue them with the CNICs as early as possible.
