President Asif Ali Zardari on Friday assured business committee that leftover amount for compensation to the Boulton Market traders will be utilised for setting up disaster management cell in Karachi. He was responding to demand of the business community that leftover Rs 2 billion should not be taken back, during distribution of pay orders among the affected shopkeepers of December 28 market fire, at a simple ceremony held at Chief Minister House.

The President agreed that besides setting up of disaster management cell the amount would be spent on upgrading fire fighting facilities and rehabilitation of schools and colleges in the city. According to those who participated in the ceremony, President Zardari also said that he will take up the issue of the Federal Board of Revenue harassment of affected businessman with Prime Minister and get it resolved.

While accepting various demands of business community, President Zardari assured that he would advise federal and provincial governments to consider these demand at the earliest and issued appropriate instructions to resolve them. The President said the government is making efforts to make Karachi a model city in next three years with the support and co-operation of business community.

He said Karachi is the economic hub of the country. Leader of Businessman Group and former President of Karachi Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KCCI) Siraj Kassim Teli welcomed the announcement of the President that the leftover amount of the relief fund would be spent on setting up a disaster management cell in Karachi.

Earlier, President Asif Zardari distributed 17 pay orders among the affected shopkeepers. Sindh Governor Dr Ishrat ul Ebad Khan and Chief Minister Syed Qaim Ali Shah have been invited to distribute pay orders among the remaining businessmen on Saturday, January 30, however, their consent is still awaited.
