The first polio case of the country, in the year 2010, has been confirmed by the laboratory and is identified as Type One case from Bajour Agency in Fata. Sources associated with Expanded Programme on Immunisation (EPI) giving details of the case, on Thursday, said first victim of the year was nine month old Bushra d/o Rahmanullah.

The girl child had the onset of paralysis early this month. She resides in locality called Inam Khra Chinagi, union council Dama Dola, tehsil Mamond. Parents of Bushra said their child did not receive any dose of oral polio vaccine.

Bajour Agency has reported second highest number of polio cases in 2009. Cases were of both types of poliovirus, ie Type One and Type Three. Within Bajour Agency most of the cases - Nine (60pc) are from tehsil Mamond (Three P1 and six P3). Children in Bajour Agency in general and Mamond tehsil in particular have not been accessible for vaccination due to the security concerns.

A total of 11 vaccination campaigns were conducted in the accessible parts of the Bajour Agency in 2009. More than 100,000 children, which is over half of the target population are persistently inaccessible to vaccination staff for immunising children due to security conditions.
