The downward trend in sugar prices is likely to begin from April onwards due to the arrival of 500,000 tonnes imported sugar by then, Chairman Trading Corporation of Pakistan (TCP) Saeed Ahmed Khan said Thursday. Talking to a private news channel, he said by February or March fresh sugarcane crop from Brazil, China and Thailand would also start to arrive - definitely improving the supply situation.

He was of the view that sugar was currently available a bit costlier due to the presence of old stocks. However, after April the sugar would be available at much cheaper prices. The government has taken timely decision to import 500,000 tonnes of sugar to overcome the shortage. The tendering process would be initiated from the beginning of February and the imported sugar would be arrived in the country by April end or mid May, he said. Responding to a question he said, the import of raw sugar is costlier by 120 dollars to 130 dollars per tonnes.
