The Multan Chamber of Commerce and Industry (MCCI) has expressed its interest in promoting collaboration with the Small and Medium Enterprises Development Authority (Smeda) for uplift of the SME sector in southern Punjab. MCCI President Malik Asrar Ahmed Awan held a meeting with Smeda Chief Executive Officer Shahid Rashid here on Monday to identify potential areas for collaboration. Smeda provincial chief Alamgir Chaudhry was also present on this occasion.

The MCCI President emphasised to enhance the number of training programmes to be organised by the Smeda at Multan, and suggested inclusion of dairy, livestock farming and Halal foods in the list of such programmes. He showed keen desire to organise an SME fair with the support of Smeda for marketing of the SME products, being produced in southern Punjab, and invited the Smeda also to set up a Women Business Development Centre in the MCCI premises for promotion of women enterepreurship.

The MCCI chief lauded the Smeda efforts in setting up an Agro-Food Processing Plant (AFP) at Multan, and assured it to extend the fullest co-operation in creating awareness among the local business community about benefits of the plant. Earlier, Shahid Rashid apprised the MCCI President of various business development services designed by the Smeda for development of the SMEs.

He specially underlined the free legal service arranged by the Smeda for the SMEs, and urged the MCCI to disseminate this service among the SMEs at the chamber forum. He disclosed that the Smeda had planned to set up 14 Women Business Development Centres in the country, which also included one for Multan.

He advised the Punjab chief of Smeda to provide MCCI with the maximum information regarding the Smeda projects relating to Multan. He dispelled the impression that Agro-Food Processing Plant (AFP) was limited to production of mango pulp only, and said the plant had the capability of processing a number of other fruits like guava, tomato etc The NCCI President also presented a written document bearing various proposals for collaboration between the Smeda and the MCCI.
