Sindh Government has set up a Commission for the welfare of children and particularly handicapped with the objective to provide them an environment and facilities whereby they had proper physical and mental growth. In this regard the Sindh government has issued notification for Provincial Commission for Child Welfare and Development (PCCWD).

This was informed by Advisor to Chief Minister Sharmila Farooqui in a call on her by Nazira Jahan, Provincial Co-ordinator for Society for Protection of Children Rights (SPARC). The Commission, Sharmila said, will prepare a comprehensive plan and a detail report in consultation with various experts.

She pointed out that Provincial Minister for Social Welfare will be the patron-in chief of the project with Secretary Social Welfare chairman and Provincial Co-ordination Social Welfare will be the Vice-Chairman. The Commission members will include various government and social welfare organisations working for children welfare.

Sharmila said that Commission's terms of reference would include reviewing concerned laws, constitutional and administrative affairs whereby the children are provided an environment, which may build up their confidence. In this regard help of UN laws for children will also be sought.

This commission, she pointed out, will work on issues like physical and mental violence against children, use of drugs, forced labour and how to protect them from physical and mental disabilities and submit its recommendations to the government. In this context, the Advisor said that symposium and seminars will be organised in co-ordination with government organisations and NGOs while a communication center will be established.
