The Law Ministry has asked the Sindh government to compile the data of beneficiaries of the National Reconciliation Ordinance (NRO) and submit it by the end of this month, it is learnt. Some senior officials in the Sindh government told Business Recorder that the federal government had directed the provincial government to collect the data of all beneficiaries after PM Yousuf Raza Gilani in his speech in the National Assembly on Thursday strongly hinted at presenting before the parliament the list of all NRO beneficiaries.

The law department of Sindh government had started gathering the data of at least 5,475 people in the province, including leaders of political parties, retired and serving bureaucrats, police officials, industrialists and businessmen. In Sindh, they said, the majority of the NRO beneficiaries was the leaders of political parties and retired bureaucrats who got their criminal and corruption cases withdrawn.

The list of NRO beneficiaries would be sent to Islamabad by the end of November after which it was likely to be presented before the parliament, they added. As the names of NRO beneficiaries were made public, all the cases against political leaders, particularly the members of ruling parties of Sindh government, bureaucrats and industrialists would be reopened and legal proceedings against them would start again, sources opined.

The sources said leaders of various political parties also got withdrawn the cases lodged by the State (government) such as loot and arson, killing of innocent people during strikes etc. The Sindh government had all the details of beneficiaries with the Law Department, but the record was misplaced during the tenure of the caretaker government, they said and added that now the record was being compiled and the process would be completed in a few days. Sindh Law Minister Ayaz Soomro could not be reached for his comments.
