At least 17 people were killed and more than 50 injured in a collision between Karachi-bound Allama Iqbal Express and a cargo train at Landhi on Tuesday. The Allama Iqbal Express was on its way to Karachi when it collided with a goods train near Juma Goth railway station at around 12:30 pm, due to which a coach of the Express train was badly damaged, resulting in the death of a number of people including women and children and injuries to dozens of passengers, said Divisional Superintendent, Pakistan Railways, Aftab Memon.

"The sad incident took place due to negligence of the driver of Allama Iqbal Express as he ignored a traffic signal at Juma Goth railway station. However, the driver of the train fled from the scene", the DS said.

Soon after the tragedy struck the passengers of the train a large number of area people and workers of rescue services reached the scene and started shifting bodies and the trapped passengers to Jinnah Postgraduate and Medical Centre (JPMC) for medical treatment and identification of the dead, Memon said.

Heavy machinery was called at the site of accident to clear the upcountry rail route for other trains and it is expected that the damaged bogies of trains would be removed within two to three hours, he said. "So far we have received 13 dead bodies and over 45 injured, out of which the condition of two injured is precarious", incharge of Accident and Emergency Department of JPMC Dr Seemin Jamali told Business Recorder.

She said that the hospital management had called supplementary staff in view of the emergency situation while proper treatment was being provided to the affectees of the accident. Around two dozen injured were sent back after medical treatment. However, the condition of two persons was critical admitted in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU), she said.

Most of the injured persons were carrying body fractures, head and chest injuries, which usually take proper treatment of six weeks, Dr Jamali said. According to her, a large number of people were approaching the hospital authorities to identify the bodies of train incident victims and only one and half month baby Manisha was identified.

The hospital officials identified a few of the bodies as Sayan son of Asad, Roshan Jahan, Farzana Noor, Ayaz Leghari, Tahir Aslam, Ismail Baloch, Manisha, Nasir son of Shafqat Masih, Nadir, Fazal son of Mohammad Umer, Ismail Baloch and Narsing son of Thakur.

The injured were identified as Abdul Ghani, Waseem, Yasmeen, Shoaib, Nawaz, Moazzam, Saqib, Ayesha, Attaullah, Shazia, Kausar, Feroz Khan, Waseem Siddiqui, Shafqat, Zahid, Nazeer, Abdul Majeed, Sufyan, Ibrahim, Mariyam, Mohammad Arshad, Tahir, Ilyas, Shafqat, Areesha, Johar Ali, Fatima, Mehroze, Khatoon, Iqbal, Anwar, Farzana, Mohsin, Asif, Mariyam etc. Meanwhile, Sindh Governor Dr Ishratul Ibad Khan has directed for proper medical treatment to the affectees of the mishap. He also expressed grief and sorrow over death of passengers and prayed for the early recovery of injured.
