Lahore High Court on Friday ordered the lifting of restrictions on the movement of nuclear scientist Dr Abdul Qadeer Khan and issued contempt notices for September 4, 2009 to DIG Islamabad and other respondents. The court further held that prima facie contempt of court has been committed and issued show cause notices to police and administration involved.

DIG, SSP, ASP of Islamabad police, Deputy Commissioner, Assistant Commissioner and City Magistrate Islamabad were made respondents in the petition. His counsel Barrister Syed Ali Zafar argued before the court that Dr Khan had earlier filed a petition challenging his virtual house arrest by the Musharraf regime under the garb of 'security'.

Counsel submitted that after lengthy arguments Islamabad High Court had declared Dr Khan to be a "free citizen". Ali Zafar stated that the security protocol provided for things like informing the security agencies in advance of his whereabouts so that proper security facilities could be provided to him.

He submitted that in violation of the court orders and the security package agreed between the parties, Dr Khan was being restrained at his house and was put under virtual house arrest when he wanted to attend a function for his granddaughter. The court after hearing the arguments directed the government that it will not restrain Dr A Q Khan in any manner.
