Over 9 percent of the total registered companies of the Large Taxpayer Units (LTUs) of Karachi and Islamabad have failed to regularly file their sales tax returns during 2008. Sources told Business Recorder on Thursday, the level of compliance by the most documented companies and corporate entities is evident from the fact that 9 percent of the total LTUs of Karachi/Lahore have not filed any sales tax return during 2008.

The data confirmed that even non-filing of sales tax returns has been committed by non-compliant big companies and corporate entities of the LTUs. In 2008, the FBR received a total of 111,902 sales tax returns against 145,107 registered units, reflecting overall non-compliance of 23 percent.

On the other hand, the level of non-compliance goes upto 35 percent in cases of certain Regional Tax Offices (RTOs). Around 25 percent of the registered units at the RTOs of Karachi, Islamabad, Sialkot, Rawalpindi, Faisalabad and Gujranwala had failed to file sales tax returns in 2008. According to the FBR data, 164 registered units of LTU Islamabad had filed sales tax returns against total 181 registered units, reflecting 9 percent non-filers.

In case of LTU Karachi, 375 registered units had filed sales tax returns against total 414 registered units, reflecting 9 percent non-filers. The 143 registered units of LTU Lahore had filed sales tax returns against total 147 registered units, reflecting non-compliance of 3 percent. Within the jurisdiction of RTO Abbottabad, 707 taxpayers filed sales tax returns against 1,012 registered units, showing a decrease of 30 percent. A total of 8,660 units filed sales tax returns against 11,805 units registered with the RTO Faisalabad, showing 27 percent non-filers.

In case of RTO Gujranwala, 4,445 units filed sales tax returns against total 6,048 units, showing 27 percent non-filers during this period. RTO Hyderabad received 2,737 sales tax returns during 2008 against 3,429 returns, showing a decrease of 20 percent.

The RTO Islamabad received 4,934 sales tax returns against 6,555 registered units, showing 25 percent non-filers. Within the jurisdiction of RTO Karachi, 34,869 units filed their sales tax returns against 46,209 units, reflecting 25 percent non-filers.

In RTO Lahore, 30,376 units filed sales tax returns against 36,423 registered units, showing a decrease of 17 percent. The RTO Multan received 6,812 sales tax returns against 8,128 registered units, showing non-compliance of 16 percent. A total of 3,771 units filed sales tax returns at the RTO Peshawar against 4,907 registered units, reflecting non-compliance by 23 percent. In case of RTO Quetta-Hub, 1,748 units filed returns against 1,807 registered units, showing a decrease of 3 percent.

The RTO Rawalpindi received a total of 7,303 sales tax returns against 11,177 registered units, showing a decrease of 35 percent. The RTO Sialkot received a total of 4,858 sales tax returns against 6,865 registered units, showing non-compliance of 29 percent.
