Prime Minister Syed Yousuf Raza Gilani has assured the provinces their due share of water, saying that they will not be deprived of one of the main factor of production. Speaking in the National Assembly on Friday, he said the government would protect provinces' rights regarding distribution of water and he himself would chair the meeting of Irsa and the Ministry of Water and Power for resolving the issue to the satisfaction of all the federating units.

Gilani said he would ensure implementation of 1991 water accord that was reached during Nawaz Sharif era, and added he had directed the Irsa to ensure water distribution among the provinces according to 1991 water accord. He told the house that country was facing a temporary water shortage and the issue would be resolved with the consultation of the President and the Punjab Chief Minister.

He claimed that now there was no contentious issue among provinces over water distribution. Responding to points of order on various issues, the Prime Minister praised opposition for extending co-operation in the passage of unanimous Federal budget, which, he said, was a record. He hailed their positive criticism as well as solid proposals. Gilani assured the house that transparency would be ensured in the relief, rehabilitation and reconstruction process of the internally displaced persons (IDPs).

The Prime Minister reiterated his resolve to make sovereign the parliament and the Constitution and ensure rule of law in the country at all costs. He also congratulated Pakistan Muslim League (N) chief Mian Nawaz Sharif for acquittal in the helicopter case from the Lahore High Court, and described it victory of the democracy.

He suggested that members should bring adjournment motions for detailed discussion on any issue they wanted rather raising points of order. Gilani said office of the Speaker was most respectable institution and the members should observe its sanctity. They should bring any issue concerning the Speaker to her chamber instead of raising it on the floor of the house.
