Power load shedding during the impending summer season is set to reduce significantly as compared to last summer season owing to prudent measures taken by the government, spokesman Pakistan Electric Power Company (Pepco) Tahir Basharat Cheema said Sunday.

Talking to Aaj News he said, the power consumers are likely to endure only 6 to 8 hours load shedding during peak summer season this year as compared to 14 hours of power outages during the last summer season.

During the last summer season the power deficit had reached up to 5000 mw. The situation has improved significantly this year due to prudent measures taken by the government. He said the dreaded menace of load shedding would be eliminated by December this year. The power deficit from March 19 to 31 this year has reduced from 1500 mw to 2500 mw as compared to 2200 mw to 3800 mw shortage witnessed during the corresponding period last year, he added.

Out of 27 Independent Power Producers (IPPs) anxious to initiate power generation here, 96 percent work on the plants of 14 IPPs have already been completed. Total available power generation capacity of Pepco is 14,088 mw. 550 mw have already been added in the system recently, he said and added that the efficiency of Pepcos two plants have also been increased to 300-mw.
