Governor Punjab Salman Taseer will inaugurate an international symposium on "Modern approaches and techniques in agriculture to ensure food security in Pakistan" on October 13 at Iqbal Auditorium of the university at 9:00 am.

The two day international symposium will jointly be organised by Faculty of Agriculture, University of Agriculture Faisalabad and Higher Education Commission Islamabad. Dr Amir Muhammad ex-Vice Chancellor UAF and Rector FAST National University, Islamabad, and Dr Kadambos Siddique, Chair in Agriculture and Director, Institute of Agriculture, the University of Western Australia will deliver their keynote addresses about climatic change with special reference to food security.

Five renowned experts from Sydney University, Australia will address the participants through video conference from 12 to 2.00 pm. Vice Chancellor, University of Agriculture Faisalabad Professor Dr Iqrar Ahmad Khan will preside the inauguration session. He termed the symposium a need of the hour as food security is the most threatening issue for developing as well as developed world.

Chairman Organising Committee and Dean Faculty of Agriculture, UAF Professor Dr Iftikhar Ahmad Khan said that scientists from United States, Canada, and Australia are likely to participate in the symposium.

Wrapping up the objectives of the symposium, Dr Iftikhar Ahmad Khan said that the purpose of this symposium is to provide a forum to the world elite scientists engaged in the agricultural research and development to interact and find possible solutions to meet the current and future threats to food security in the world.

The themes of the symposium are to explore new ways and means for sustainable agriculture under changing climate scenario, crop growth modelling, crop improvement through molecular techniques, control of crop diseases through technological advances, precision agriculture, innovative technologies in agriculture, and introduction and scope of cost effective material for pressurised irrigation, he added.

Associate Professor Department of Agronomy Dr Ashfaq Ahmad Chatha is the Secretary Organising Committee of international symposium.
