The Managing Director of Private Power Infrastructure Board (PPIB), Fayyaz Elahi, was not allowed to attend a meeting on power co-generation, attended by Pakistan Sugar Mills Association (PSMA), officials sources told Business Recorder. The meeting was presided over by Prime Minister Yousaf Raza Gilani.

Sources said that Fayyaz's name was on the list of invitees, but PM House informed his office that he was not required to attend the meeting. Subsequent to this, the Ministry of Industries and Production, which deals directly with PSMA, tried to convince Prime Minister House that PPIB MD should be allowed to attend the meeting, but their request was again turned down, sources added.

However, Secretary, Water and Power, Ismael Qureshi, took Fayyaz Elahi along with him to PM House where they were informed that PPIB MD may remain on hand, and would be summoned, if required. The meeting ended without his being summoned.

According to an official statement, PSMA team, headed by its Chairman, briefed the Prime Minister about energy co-generation at local level (within sugar mill) out of residual elements of the sugar industry. The delegation apprised the Prime Minster that sugar mills in Pakistan would be generating 1000 mw electricity by 2010 and it would be enhanced to 2000 mw by 2012.

The Prime Minister appreciated the concept and scope of the project and formed a committee to examine the issues pertaining to co-generation of electricity and the tariff issue with the Nepra. The committee is to be headed by Minister for Water and Power while members Secretary Water and Power, Secretary Industries and Production and Nepra Chairman.

The Prime Minister told the PSMA delegation that outstanding dues of the farmers of crushing season against the sugar mills must be paid on priority basis. The delegation assured the Prime Minister that these dues would be paid by July 31, the statement said.
