The incident occurred at Battal in Rawalakot sector on the Line of Control, which separates the Indian and Pakistani parts of the Himalayan territory, chief Pakistani military spokesman Major-General Athar Abbas told AFP.
"Indians fired two mortars and small arms on a Pakistani check-post at 2 pm," said Abbas. He said Pakistani soldiers retaliated with mortars and small arms, adding that a protest was communicated through a hot line across the border. "Pakistan is demanding an immediate meeting at the level of Directors General Military Operations," he said.
The incident was a rare violation of a cease-fire, which Pakistan and India agreed to hold in November 2003 along the Line of Control before they launched peace talks in January 2004. Meanwhile, the meeting of Pak-India Technical Working Group on cross LoC Confidence Building Measures, which was to be held on Thursday in Islamabad, has been postponed on India's request as Indian head of delegation had rushed to Kabul due to emergency there.
The meeting was to discuss Kashmir-related CBMs including increase in frequency of bus services, trade and truck services across the LoC and opening of points on LoC. The first meeting of the group was held in May 2006, in New Delhi.
