The security forces on Monday killed 13 militants after they attacked a security check post in the troubled tribal region, the army said. Army spokesman Major General Waheed Arshad said some 70 miscreants attacked the check post at 2 am in South Waziristan. He did not say if there was any casualty on part of the security forces.

Correspondents in South Waziristan said the security forces surrounded the militants in early morning and called more forces for support. Officials said the militants fired rockets and used small arms at the check post at Dargai, a town 25 kilometers east of Wana, the headquarters of South Waziristan, at 5 am. The 'Scouts Force' launched a counter attack against the assailants, killing four of them, the officials said.

Locals said the security forces blocked the road for traffic between Wana and Tank, a major city at the edge of South Waziristan tribal region. The army spokesman confirmed that aircraft of coalition forces last night mistakenly intruded in Pakistan Kurrum tribal agency during operation in Afghan border area.

He said the coalition forces expressed regret when informed about the border violation. In another incident, two security personnel were injured in attacks on check posts in North Waziristan near the Afghan border late last night. Tribal elders from Waziristan boycotted a grand Pak-Afghan peace jirga or council concluded in Kabul on Sunday. The government expects the jirga would produce positive results but it is feared that the jirga would further worsen the situation.
