President and Chief of Army Staff, General Pervez Musharraf said on Friday that extremism and militancy are the biggest threat to security of the country and no effort shall be spared to eradicate this menace and ensure sustainability of economic progress.

The president made the remarks while chairing 102nd corps commanders conference, which was held at General Headquarters, an army statement said. The participants were briefed in detail on the prevalent security environment with a focus on situation in tribal areas and other parts of NWFP where troops are deployed to support the provincial government, the ISPR statement said.

"The conference also reviewed operational preparedness, training and administrative matters of the army". While expressing satisfaction on the state of operational preparedness the president praised the efforts, work done and sacrifices rendered by troops in tribal areas and during relief efforts for flood affected areas, the statement said.

The conference reiterated its resolve to continue to provide full support to the federal government for continuation of progress as an enlightened, moderate and economically strong nation.

It was attended by Vice Chief of Army Staff, General Ahsan Saleem Hyat, corps commanders, principal staff officer and other senior military officials.
