Pakistan and Afghanistan on Monday agreed to deny sanctuary, training and financing to terrorists in each other's country, and vowed to promote peace, security and stability in the region. President General Pervez Musharraf and his Afghan counterpart Hamid Karzai in "comprehensive, cordial and useful talks" here in the Turkish capital and hosted by the Turkish leaders.

They pledged to co-operate towards promoting peace, security, stability and economic development in the region, said the "Ankara Declaration" released here after the talks. President Pervez Musharraf and Afghan President Hamid Karzai agreed to the formation of a joint working group to try and ease tensions between the two countries.

Turkish President Ahmet Necdet Sezer announced that the group would be comprised of high level officials from all three countries and that Turkey would be honoured if Karzai and Musharraf would be able to return to Ankara for further talks in late 2007 or 2008.

The two-day talks were aimed to ease relations between Afghanistan and Pakistan particularly over mutual accusations that the other was responsible for a resurgence of the Taliban. Musharraf and Karzai identified extremism and terrorism as a common threat and a danger to the region, and called for 'co-ordinated action' to fight it and continue their support to 'moderation'.

President Ahmet Necdet Sezer and Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan of Turkey attended the meeting that also covered regional and international issues. The leaders emphasised that the international community must work together to promote the objectives of Afghanistan Compact.

Both leaders agreed that their historical ties serve as a common basis to address all challenges hampering the stability, security and the development of their region. They vowed to enhance their co-operation by building upon the 'joint press statement' of September 7, 2006 issued during President Musharraf's visit to Kabul.

The two leaders also agreed to further strengthen bilateral relations on the basis of good-neighbourliness, respect for territorial integrity and non-interference in each other's internal affairs.

They also pledged to work together to improve and strengthen the climate of trust and co-operation by acknowledging the great opportunities that exist for progress and economic development in the region.

They also expressed concern at the alarming increase in poppy cultivation in Afghanistan and underlined the connection between terrorism, drug-trafficking and organised crime in the region, and emphasised the need for concerted efforts to combat these menaces.

They reaffirmed their commitment to enhancing goodwill and creating further confidence building measures and mechanisms through interaction between political representatives, civil society, academicians, media, and sports and cultural links. They also resolved to work jointly for facilitating orderly repatriation of Afghan refugees from Pakistan.

He also appreciated Pakistan's offer to host the next meeting of Regional Economic Co-operation Conference on Afghanistan (RECCA). President Musharraf and President Karzai commended the initiative of Turkey for hosting the summit meeting and appreciated its offer to organise further meetings towards the end of 2007 or early 2008.
