The Sensitive Price Indicator (SPI) year-on-year of 53 essential items for week ending on January 11 has registered 9.23 percent increase as compared to the corresponding week of last year, reversing double digit trend after a long time.

The percentage fall in prices given in the Federal Bureau of Statistics' (FBS) bulletin show some relief. However, the income group up to Rs 3,000, with 11.86 percent, Rs 3,001-5,000 by 10.85 percent and up to Rs 12,000 by 10.11 percent rise over the corresponding week of last year are still facing double-digit inflation.

The income group of above Rs 12,000 with 8.24 percent increase, is the least affected. The SPI bulletin, based on data of 53 items from 17 urban centres, showed that 16 items registered increase, 10 items showed decline, while prices of 27 items experienced no change during the week.

CPI DOWN: The Consumer Price Index (CPI) during the first six months (July to December) of current fiscal year 2006-07 showed declining trend at 8.39 percent as compared to last two fiscal years, with 8.81 percent in 2004-05, and 8.43 percent in 2005-06. However, it showed increase in December at 8.88 percent over the corresponding month of last year and increase of 0.47 percent over the previous month--November.

The Federal Bureau of Statistics (FBS) released the monthly data of three price indices SPI, CPI and WPI, showing inflation on the rise. The Wholesale Price Index (WPI) for December showed 8 percent increase against corresponding month of last year, which is quite low from previous year's increase of 11.03 percent over its previous year corresponding month but is quite high when compared to 4.19 percent increase in December 2004 to its corresponding month of 2003.

Similarly, SPI, the weekly indicator of inflation, for the past six months showed increase of 11.80 percent over last year's same period, which was only 6.67 percent increase over the previous year.

All three inflation indicators SPI, CPI and WPI for December were higher than previous month (November) by 0.76 percent, 0.47 percent and 0.37 percent, respectively.
