He was talking to MNAs Dr Firdous Ashiq Awan and Asiya Azeem and a PML leader from NWFP, Lala Nisar Khan, who called on him at the PM House here on Saturday. The Prime Minister said that the government would remove only manmade laws and discriminatory social practices against women, which are repugnant to the letter and spirit of the faith. He reiterated government's commitment to restore the rightful place of women as enjoined by the tenets of the faith.
He said that the government had brought about political and economic stability in the country as a result of the reforms introduced during last seven years. He said that it was important that this reform agenda was carried forward, for which consistency and continuity of policies were required, and the PML and its allies were committed to improving the standard of living of the people.
He said that the enrolment drive launched by PML needed to be carried out in a systematic and institutionalised manner. It should especially focus on the enrolment of women who constitute half of the country's population, he added. The general political situation in the country and party matters also came under discussion in the meeting.
The parliamentarians apprised the Prime Minister of the progress of development schemes in their respective constituencies. The parliamentarians said the passage of Women's Rights Act had been welcomed across the country and was proof of the government's commitment to protect the rights of women. Lala Nisar apprised the Prime Minister of reorganisation of PML in NWFP and said that its membership drive was going on satisfactorily.
