Shaharyar M Khan has resigned as chairman of Pakistan Cricket Board, it was officially learnt on Friday. President General Pervez Musharraf accepted resignation of Chairman Pakistan Cricket Board, Shaharyar M Khan and appointed Dr Nasim Ashraf as new chairman of PCB.

President, who is also Patron-in-chief of PCB, eulogised the services of Shaharyar M Khan and said his efforts for the promotion and advancement of cricket in Pakistan are commendable. He said during his tenure of Shaharyar M Khan as Chairman PCB, Pakistan achieved remarkable successes in the field of cricket. Shaharyar, 72, took over as PCB ad hoc committee Chairman in December 2003 after Lieutenant General Tauqeer Zia (Retd) stepped down upon completing four years in the post.

Shaharyar's resignation came a day after Younis Khan refused to accept the job of captaincy in place of Inzamamul Haq for the Champions Trophy starting in India on Saturday. Younis turned down the captaincy because he "didn't want to be dummy captain". His decision took the cricket fans by surprise.

"I got dishearten after the incident of Oval and abrupt decision of Younis Khan", Shaharyar said. "Hence my resignation" he said in his crisp comments.

Dr Nasim Ashraf, who was a member of Shaharyar-led ad hoc committee and is Advisor with status of Minister, paid compliments to Shaharyar for working for the betterment of cricket.

"I myself will make efforts to bring further improvement in the performance of national cricket team and also work for the promotion of the game at grassroots level," Dr Nasim Ashraf said. Muhammad Yousuf has been appointed captain and Abdul Razzaq vice captain for the Champions Trophy.
