The commerce ministry, had sent a panel of three former judges ie Justice Mahboob Ahmad, Justice Zahid Ali Kurban and Justice S. Ali Aslam Jafari two months ago to the establishment division for the issuance of notification under section 125 of the Insurance Ordinance 2000.
Subsequently, the establishment division submitted nomination file to the Prime Minister Shaukat Aziz who cleared the name of Justice Jafri.
Earlier, the government appointed Madood Ahmad Lodhi as FIO but later on withdrew his notification, after it was established that he does not qualify for the slot.
According to the terms of reference approved by the government, any person who is not out of the profession for two years before appointment would not be eligible for this post.
Sources said, donors were pressurising the government for the appointment of Insurance Ombudsman for the last several months, so that insurance dispute could be resolved immediately.
The government would establish two insurance tribunals at Lahore and Karachi to facilitate the policyholders.
Institution of the Federal Insurance Ombudsman is meant to provide diagnosis, investigation, redressal and rectification of any injustice done to a person through maladministration by any of the insurers in the public or private sector.
The institution would address grievances relating to life insurance as well as general insurance sector.
