Prime Minister Shaukat Aziz on Sunday said the country is now financially strong with government having enough resources to improve peoples' living standard by providing them basic amenities, including water, electricity, gas, education and health.Addressing a mammoth public meeting after inaugurating gas supply project for Kot Radha Kishan, some 20-km off Kasur.

he said, "Prudent economic policies have put the country on the road to progress and prosperity with government having sufficient funds to spend on the development projects across the country."

The project has been completed at a cost of Rs 52.17 million with 13 kilometres main supply line and 59-km distribution network.

Shaukat Aziz said contrary to the past governments, the present one has been pursuing people-friendly policies and spending maximum possible resources for ameliorating lot of the common man.

"Work on Bhasha-Diamer Dam is going to be inaugurated this month while other projects including Kalabagh, Akhori, Munda and Kurram Tangi would also be initiated in due course of time", he added.

"In the past those at the helm of affairs stuffed their own coffers while we under the guidance of President Pervez Musharraf have been focusing on improvement of the country's economy and filling national kitty."

He said Pakistan Muslim League is committed to take the country to new heights of glory, adding that at a convention held in connection with centenary celebrations of the party at Minar-e-Pakistan on March 23, the PML leaders reiterated their commitment to leave no stone unturned to make Pakistan one of the greatest countries of the world.

The Prime Minister said to achieve the objective of rapid growth in agriculture and industrial sectors, a comprehensive plan has been chalked out for ensuring provision of sufficient irrigation water to growers and generation of power under which five mega dams are going to be built.

The Premier said, "Pakistan was achieved in the name of Islam and we are endeavouring to make it bastion of Islam and make it impregnable so that nobody dare to cast evil eye on it."

He said the way to make our beloved country strong and prosperous is to follow true teachings of Islam of brotherhood, patience and accommodation. "We would have to work unitedly to foil evil designs of those who are out to project negative image of Islam through acts of terrorism and by indulging in sectarianism. Such acts not only bring bad name to our great religion but also to our country," he added.

Shaukat Aziz said the government is paying special attention to betterment of growers and added that various projects have been launched for the purpose.

Hoping that this year country would reap bumper wheat crop, he assured the growers that government would take effective measures to ensure that they get due return of their produce. Amidst thunderous applause the Prime Minister announced Rs 30 million for electricity projects, Rs 20 million for farm-to-market roads besides additional funds for provision of gas to a number of villages of the area.

He said, "We are implementing a gigantic plan envisaging provision of electricity and clean drinking water to almost all villages of the country and gas to most of towns and villages by the end of 2007."

Shaukat Aziz said that entire country, under 'Roshan Pakistan' project would be electrified by the end of year 2007.

On the blasphemous sketches issue, he said that Pakistan's government had protested their publication and added that no Pakistani could bear such an act.

He said that it was high time that the entire nation should forge unity in its ranks.

The Premier said that all the projects announced by the President during his recent visit to Kasur would be executed.

He appreciated the people of Kasur for extending donations and assistance to the victims of October 8 earthquake.

He also announced a gas supply project for Chhanga Manga town and the villages around Chunian.

Shaukat Aziz, who also inaugurated a private school in Kot Radha Kishan, said that private sector is being encouraged to play its role as the government alone cannot accomplish the gigantic task of eliminating illiteracy and spreading the light of education in every nook and corner of the country.

The Premier especially appreciated the efforts of Chief Minister Chaudhry Pervaiz Elahi for promoting education and said that 'Parha Likha Punjab' programme being implemented in the Punjab is role model for other provinces, adding that they have already started replicating it.

In a lighter vein he said that though it had already been declared to give status of sub-division to Kot Radha Kishan, but on the insistence of Sardar Tufail, he is again announcing to give it this status.

Speaking on the occasion, Pervaiz Elahi said that a number of development projects are being carried out in the district of Kasur, including dualisation of Lahore-Kasur road.

He said completion of this dual carriageway to be constructed up to Ganda Singh Wala would open new vistas of progress and prosperity for the people of the area.

Earlier, Sardar Tufail, MNA and PML District Kasur President, presented address of welcome and thanked the Prime Minister and the Chief Minister for taking special interest in the development of the district.

Minister for State for Petroleum Naseeruddin Mengal, elected representatives, PML leaders and workers and elite of the area attended the ceremony.
