The Government of Pakistan has appointed Anwar Ali as the new Chairman of Pakistan Atomic Energy Commission (PAEC) vice Pervez Butt, who will retire on completion of his tenure on April 5, 2006.

The government has also appointed Karim Ahmed as the new Chairman of Dr AQ Khan Research Laboratories (KRL) vice Dr Javed Arshad Mirza, who will retire on completion of his tenure on March 31, 2006.

Anwar Ali, who joined PAEC as assistant scientific officer in March 1967, is at present, member technical and the senior most scientist at PAEC.

He has a distinguished academic record, he has done masters in physics from the Government College, Lahore, and also holds a masters degree in nuclear physics.

He has rich all round experience and outstanding achievements to his credit in various departments of PAEC as well as KRL, and has also made significant contributions to the Shaheen Missile Programme of Pakistan.

He was a member of the prestigious team of engineers and scientists who conducted nuclear tests at Chaghai in May 1998. For his outstanding contributions to the service of Pakistan's Strategic Programme, he was awarded the President's Medal for Pride of Performance and Hilal-e-Imtiaz.

Karim Ahmed, who is at present, serving as Director General Control & Guidance Division, joined KRL in 1978 as a scientific officer. He has an outstanding academic record and rich experience of scientific and engineering work at KRL.

He has done Masters in computer technology as well as masters in digital systems. During his service at KRL, Karim Ahmed has made invaluable contributions to the enrichment programme, and to the Ghauri and Anza Missile projects.

Karim Ahmed has also been associated with the faculty of National University of Science and Technology (Nust) as a visiting professor for post-graduate studies in computer architecture.

In recognition of his invaluable contributions to Pakistan's Strategic Programme, Karim Ahmed was awarded the President's Medal for Pride of Performance.
