Police fired teargas and rubber bullets to disperse hundreds of demonstrators in the federal capital on Sunday, despite sealing the city to stop MMA activists protesting against blasphemous cartoons published in Denmark and some other European countries.

Hundreds of protesters resumed their protest, organised by Muttahida Majlis-e-Amal at Abpara Chowk despite hardships in their way from the law-enforcement agencies.

Earlier, the demonstrators and police followed by Rangers engaged in constant battles at Aabpara, as police lobbed teargas on the protesters to disperse them that caused direct clash between the demonstrators and the police.

The police and the demonstrators were throwing stones on each other due to which several protestors and policemen wounded.

The residents of the G-6 living near Abpara Chowk also participated in stone-throwing at the police. The women and children were in direct effect of the sharp odour of the teargas.

The demonstrators were chanting slogans against America, Denmark and European media, and were condemning the publication of blasphemous caricatures by European media.

They were also chanting slogans against the government, President General Pervez Musharraf and President Bush.

After negotiations with police authorities, the demonstration then transformed in a gathering at Abpara Chowk.

Speakers of the gathering said the MMA had succeeded in its scheduled rally against the publication of sacrilegious caricature by newspapers of the European countries.

All prominent leaders and thousands of activists were arrested.

They asked the government not stop way of the "Ghulamaan-e-Mustafa" who will give their lives for their Holy Prophet (PBUH).

They said their leaders have directed not to damage any public or government property, adding had the government allowed us for a peaceful rally no one would have been wounded.

However, at the moment no any prominent leader of the MMA was present on the occasion but the protesters resumed their rally peacefully after a gathering by damaging not a single government and public property.

Teargas disperses Fazl, Baloch, Wasan's sit-in at Abpara chowk: The Leader of the Opposition in the National Assembly, Maulana Fazlur Rehman, MMA Deputy Secretary-General Liaquat Baloch, Manzoor Wasan of PPP, and others were dispersed by lobbying a shell of teargas by police when they were staging a sit-in at Abpara Chowk in the federal capital. After house arrest at the Parliament Lodges, Maulana Fazlur Rehman was given information from the Interior Minister Aftab Ahmed Khan Sherpao to stage rally from Lodges to Abpara Chowk. But the police already present on the occasion dispersed them by lobbying a shell of teargas at the time when the Maulana was preparing to deliver a speech.

The rally taken out from Parliament Lodges in the leadership of Maulana Fazlur Rehman along with Liaquat Baloch, MNA Qari Gul Rehman and others reached Abpara Chowk comprising some other 30 people. Manzoor Wasan represented the ARD.

Earlier, during the rally while talking to reporter, Fazlur Rehman strongly condemned the arrest and violence over the alliance activists in the twin cities. He said the protest against the publication of the blasphemous caricatures by newspapers of the European countries.

He said the government should quit by acknowledging its failure by not conveying sentiments of the people.

Speaking on the occasion, Liaquat Baloch said the MMA had succeeded in its scheduled announcement for holding rally against the publication of blasphemous caricatures by the European newspapers. He said the blasphemous caricatures would not only destroy peace of the world, but it will also demolish economy of the world especially of the West. Baloch appealed to the people to come out against the policies of the Musharraf regime. Manzoor Wasan said the government has stopped the people from staging a peaceful rally to please the Europeans and the Americans.
